Thinking of getting a Berkey water filter to use on both an everyday and emergency basis (my brother in Houston says parts of the city are still on boiled or bottled).

Anybody have any experience with the different filter types? My reading suggests that Berkey is about the best and most affordable over the life of the unit and filters.

I've got one and it does a great job. I don't have city/county water so I don't worry about flouride filters. I run just the two black filters and the water tastes great. We have been using our for several years and replaced the filters only once. I would suggest you get the biggest one you can. You will always find a need for more water than you think you will need.

Hey Mark! Berkey is the only way to go! My wife and I have had ours since 2001 and we've replaced the purifying elements only twice since. Oh and by the way, I became an Authorized Dealer last year wink We'll be set up at the SGK Emergency Preparedness Expo in Doswell on the 21st and 22nd of October. Come check them our for yourself! Just skip the tables that are selling everything under the sun and look for the "Berkey Guy"!

I would recommend the Black Berkey filters . They filter out just about every pathogens and each filter can process up to 3k gallons. Also, you can make your own Berkey type system using buckets.

I have quite a few customers that do the DIY system for Emergency Preparedness. It's crucial that a proper seal is maintained between the Black Berkey and their wingnuts. If not, you've defeated the purpose of the elements altogether. Not to mention, it really doesn't have that finished look that you would be proud to display on your countertop wink.

The Black Berkey elements are more than just a filter. They've been tested and proven to remove a wide variety of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, petroleum based liquids, viruses, and bacteria! Many of them to below lab detectable levels. That's purification!

Check out My Berkey Store ! If any of my fellow Virginians do decide on one, use the coupon code "LOCALSONLY" for free shipping.

If you have the black filters is there any reason to have the white/fluoride filters?

Unless you want to remove all traces of Fluoride from your water, not really. The Black Berkey elements are already capable of removing >99.9% of Fluorine from tap water. However, we run the PF-2 filters in our Berkey at home for added insurance.
