The risk is no greater than selling to somebody with one.

As a non licensed seller, you can sell pistols, rifles, shotguns, etc to anybody over 18. There's no such thing as being extra safe by not selling to anybody under 21, that's not what the law is so it's not any safer.

I don't have a CHL. I love guns but have no interest in carrying, and I'm not going to get one just to buy guns here.

Do what you want guys, but I've had to pass on several pieces I've been prepared to purchase because the seller wants a CHL holder.

When I sell, I verify the state of residence and the age of the buyer. Driver's license suffices.

You are following the law and this should be enough. I do agree with you 100% but also can comfortably state that IF you had a CHL CCP or whatever we want to call our well documented background check, that on the day and time of issue you were cleared and approved as a safe person to own and carry a firearm. This little nugget is why people insist on CHP = false sense of security . I like to use “must be willing to complete a Bill of sale”. As my personal benchmark for a false sense of security. Its all about perception of covering ones arse. Methinks.

Unfortunetly the NRA has endorsed this gun control mentality of "background checks" on firearm purchases.

There is no requirement for a VA resident to provide ID much less a CHL on a private sale.

Someone told me --a back ground check must be done if you are a private person selling a gun at last weekends Richmond Gun Show.... Is this true?

No.
As for now background checks for private sales are voluntary no matter the location.

There is a VSP background check booth set up at all gunshows, however it is voluntary.

Luckily for us most VA private sellers and buyers are smart enough not to partake in this service.
