If you wanna catch BIG catfish try the James River in the Richmond area or Buggs Island Lake where the new state record and pending world record was caught. For big blue cats live brimm work well.

i agree, go to james for monsters..if you want to catch steady 5-15 pounders all day long go to potomac river

when i first started fishing there around the sunken barges on potomac would have 2 rods, and was biting so fast that had to give up one and just use the single rod n real..

if you are looking to catch a bunch of catfish use chicken livers, if you are looking for big ones cut bait or live panfish work great.

Don't eat any fish, especially the big cats, below the Falls of the James.Especially the ones beyond 14th Street.Still too many toxins in the river silt from the old paper companies that used to be there.

James. You can wade in and pull 30lbs right up to you in the water. That gets your blood pumping.

last time I went to chickahominee we were slaying catfish at night under the bridge. As soon as you'd cast one out, the other rod would take a hit.

We were just using worms on a split bottom rig. Not huge catfish, but big enough to eat.

any cut bait works best in my area of the potomac.... go catch a bunch of shad when you can and freeze them so you have them when you are ready to go. big bait=big fish to eat it however you may cut way down on the number you catch.

For bait I've been using hotdogs that we left out a bit too long and don't plan on using for human consumption. I've been catching them the last couple of nights in a tributary creek of the Pamunkey river that's right out my back door. As for hooks, I've gotten hooked on circle hooks ( no pun intended). Mostly because once they bite they hook themselves. Anyone else have luck with this king of hook? As for weight(s) I use egg sinkers or something similar.

i have used those circle hooks and like them as well. i also use old left over dinner scraps. An easy thing to do is steal a pair of you wife's panty hose, tie a knot in them, stuff some food in, then tie another knot making a small ball, run your hook through that and it is almost impossible to get off the hook. works great to keep your bait from being "stolen"

I may have a bit of a problem with getting ahold of the panty hose. Don't currently have a wife or girlfriend to snag a pair from. And don't want to go through the checkout lane for it. Only to get a funny look from the cashier. smirk

if you have current use the weight, but in water with no current i dont use weight. i throw the bait out and let it sink to the bottom. i use spin cast reels and once the bait is on the bottom, i open the bail. this way if the fish picks up the bait it never feels weight. when he takes it you will see the line going off the reel. i have had in the past fish bite and feel weight and let go, thats why i do it this way now.

From on Orange Co. guy to another. If you are going to catfish the Rapp. James, or the Potomac and want to catch fish. Go to Gander Mtn and buy 2 12 to 15 in eel's cu them in to about a 2 1/2in chunk, use a 6/0 to 8/0 circle hook and catch a bunch of fish and doing have to worry about losing your bait. Can catch plenty of fish on one chunk of eel. When you put the hook thru the eel, hook goes into the meat out thru the skin. This is so the hook doesn't bury itself into the eel. Have fun, any questions just PM me.

Coming from the deep south, back west, I have catfished all of my life. If you want to get them, a good sponge with stink bait on a treble hook works great. Quick Recipe for Stink Bait:

1 large block of velveta left out to soften up.
1 Large jar of cheese sauce (Whatever you want)
1 block of soft cheese, like bree or something.
1 small jar of peanut butter
Chicken liver blood
1 can of beer
mix up to a nice pasty consistency, cover in coffee jar, and let set for a week in the sun. Catfish love that stuff!!!

I've pulled in a few nice cats down close to the West Point bridge. Seems as squid works quite well in this area. Shad is a given and using a cast net keeps fresh bait in the well.

I LOVE circle hooks and the cats get to the boat easily. I'll rig a pyramid weight with a long leader to keep the hook off the bottom. I've learned a few tricks about rigging but loosing weights gets expensive after awhile.

I use spinning reels and leave the bails closed due to the water current in my area. All you got to do is watch the rod tips. A little bump is all you will see when they hit. I've sat there for 20 minutes, missed the tip bump, figured I'd try another cast...FISH ON!! I can't wait till I get a big cat on the line.

As far as eating them the bigger they are the opinions is let them go back. Smaller cats under 36" that have decent skin condition are tasty. I haven't gotten the skinning skills down so my lady will grill it. Skin down on the grill or in the oven on broil for some GREAT fish!!

to skin a catfish cut a circle aaround the fish just behind the side fins, cut a slit on top down to and around the top fin, cut a slit down the belly to the tail. then grab one side at a time at the top with pliers, and the skin will pull off all the way to the tail. you can cut a boneless filet off each side after that and fry it up
