Anyone go this range regularly? That place is a friggin free-for-all. There's nobody in the Observation/Control room and rarely any staff in the range area except for sweeping up brass and replacing cardboard for the targets. Other than that, your on your own. I saw at least 3 people step back out of the box with loaded weapons to tell their buddies to check out the sweet head shot they just made out of 15 rounds. The place is a total POS. And to top it all off, it was $92 for 150 rounds of .45 acp, and that was with the $5 discount. Please!!

I can't wait fo the new place on Broad Street to open. It seems like it may be a little pricey as well, but I think you just pay a membership fee and shoot your own ammo if you choose.

And, end rant.

Being right down the street from the ghetto doesn't help either. Lots of sketchy people there.

Haha, I take it you use the term "ghetto" loosely? I know it's nothing compared to the utopia that is NoVA, but its not in the ghetto. Well, for all the many times I've driven through or went to the range I never thought it's the ghetto. Or maybe I never actually looked around?? Obviously a range that has a pretty wide selection of rental guns, including full autos attracts some "undesireables" but what public range doesn't get some every once in a while? Either way, doesn't make it in the ghetto.

I havn't been there in a while but I do agree, the range is pretty pricey and I just pay attention to whos around me. I saw a few idiots playing "gangsta" who absolutely should not have ever been there. Luckily I was finished so I left and told the people at the desk that they should pay them a visit. But aside from that, the only other people I've seen who don't seem to know what they're doing were worryingly enough actually LEO's from various depts. I normally only go to the range on off-peak times but if anyones waistband is closer to their ankles than their hips, or acting dangerous, i'm walking the other way. I don't think I've ever seen anyone watching through the observation windows. But at the same time, the smoking gun in petersburg doesn't have observation windows and the entire range feels like its about the size of my pantry. Last time I was there, a guy at the other end (about 10' away) got hit with a piece of shrapnel!! Lucky he wasnt hurt. Don't think I'll be back there.

Even though its across the street from the VSP Office, It's not in the greatest part of town.

NOVA is far from Utopia lol.

I did take the Basic Handgun Course at Dominion and I was satisfied with it. They are just kind of run down and overly expensive.

Haha, these days you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere where the "locals" are entirely happy with whats going on in the area.

I agree it is a bit old but there aren't exactly an abundance of ranges around richmond. And they get you on having to buy their ammo. I try to go on thursdays because theres no range fee for ccw permit holders, saves you a coupla $$. It is kinda in that "in-between" area, travel east and your getting into the sketchier areas since your heading into the city, about 5 miles west and your in the rather desirable salisbury area. It doesn't help that the front of the place is obscured from the main road by that falling down shack either. I was talking to the manager (i think) about a year or so ago and he was telling me that the owner of southern gun world on the corner purposely built that shack all crappy in order to put people off. Whether or not that is true, I don't know though.

supossedly years ago karen, the owner of sgw wanted to buy out dominion, hence the name southern gun world. The owner of dominion refused to sell. Out of spite, karen left the rotting barn standing.

The employees at dominion are good people. Some gangbangers go to shoot there, but I've never felt unsafe.

They have the friendliest and most genuine staff of any of the firearms related businesses in town. They are $28 for FFL transfers. They have many weapons available to shoot, including many class 3's. They are a class 3 dealer and are able to assist in getting cans and at very competitive rates. Yes the range ammo is pricey; it's where they make their money. There are no time limits; it's the business model.

Most of their monitoring is video monitoring. I have been in there when someone came down and reprimanded a shooter (was many lanes down; I have no idea what he did) at the line.

I have never felt unwelcome there, which is more than I can say for many places. The building is older, but the staff really makes up for it. If you get a membership, there is a discount on ammunition as well.

The range there has been like that pretty much since Don Weiss died. Don kept a tight reign on folks not handling guns safely and stuff. He would ask you if you knew how to operate the electric target holder and would come down and show you if you didn't. His ammo was fair priced and it was real enjoyable. He was a darn good friend who I miss dearly.

I have and do continue to shoot at Dominion alot, the staff is really nice. Yes the place is a little run down, but I don't see many other options out there; lets face the facts with minimal competition and few of us having the property to shoot outside you have to deal with what we have for ranges right now..

Yes there is some riff-raff there from time to time and I have seen unsafe activities at times, but I have also seen the staff reprimand them and I have seen people asked to leave. Anyone who thinks they won't see the same things at the new range or any range for that matter is naive.

Maybe with the new range Dominion will actually get updated in order to compete.

Huh Ghetto? Though I respect your opinion & agree with the sketchy crowd at times. Dominion is far from being in the Ghetto
I have had the privilege of living and work @ FT Lee which has a very diverse group of military personnel men and woman so if you felt like you were in the so called "Ghetto" being at Dominion you would certainly feel as if you were in Compton standing in the middle of FT Lee. I'm no more comfortable around the wanna be thug/ganster types than the next person. But then there are some who would feel uncomfortable with Colon Powell in the booth next them, and there are numerous gun clubs that screen that sort of thing most open to the public do not.

"I personally am more afraid of the Modern Warfare video game crowd" at least the Thugs know you can't press the reset button and re spawn, however there are some who believe they could survive 9 shots and go on to a lucrative rap career.
Your comfort level really depends on your character I know quite a few military personnel who don't feel comfortable around civilians with firearms, because they have never seen or experienced the destruction that one could cause, so rest a sure while your judging someone is judging you.

I wouldn't say I really felt unsafe, since I am usually holding a gun with 13 rounds of .45 acp in my hand. I just feel like there could be more of a presence made by the staff. Some kind of uniform to be able to identify staff would be nice. I still go there and they stil get my money. I just try to go during the day when it's less crowded. I'll be interested to see how the new range compares.

"down the street" from the Ghetto. Not really "in" the ghetto. Drive down Hull Street towards downtown a little more.

In any case, I don't have to go there anymore, so it really doesn't matter.

The people there are really nice, and helpful. The ammo is a little expensive. They monitor the range with cameras, and always have a number of employees working, carrying of course.

I wouldn't call that area ghetto it's Chesterfield. I'm not too far from there I'm further down between midlo and hull st in Richmond. They are expensive and a little ratty but you can't beat the convenience of having it there.

No matter where you are you have to worry slightly about safety with live rounds going off regardless of who is behind the weapons, but I know what you mean it's always uneasy with people so close to you who may not be following the best safety procedures.

At least they let you shoot 5.7's there. Can't wait for the new range on Broad they are going to be packed. Biggest indoor range in the country in the heart of Va!

Is this their policy for open carry and conceal carry inside the store and range? I've only been there a handful of times out of convenience so I never ran across that since I usually bring my weapons in their case. Since you're at a shooting range you'd assume it wouldn't be a problem, sounds oxymoronic but I imagine they have their reasons.

I needed to call them about their price and the type of 5.7 ammo they carry for you to shoot so I'm going to ask them about this also.

Yeah, this was the first range I've been to, back when I didn't know what good ammo prices were.I blew so much money on .45ACP.

I was also surprised they didn't record anything about me.... sold me ammo without checking ID, (Just turned 21 at the time, but they wouldn't have known)

The characters who frequent the range are also just outlandish its almost funny (but oh so unsafe). When I went there was a housewife in heels firing a nickel plated mossberg cruiser. She also commented it was her first time firing a shotgun.....

It makes me wonder.... where is the range officer!?!?

Used to be issac Walton league. Supossedly they have river access for fishing and you can move around there.

If you have to much money I highly suggest cavalier in montpieller. That's a nice range.

ok range but not open year round, and it's supposed to be rifle/shotgun only. With only peer pressure to clean the place up, the last time I went it had tin cans, pumpkins, etc littering the place. Free is free though.
