I'm going to start loading for this caliber. Looking for anyone with experience in it for bullet wieght recommendations. I've read the 155 are snappy and the 180 are a little more manageable. Ive always heard to go for the higher speed ammo rather than the heavy wieght subsonic.

I plan on using w231 to keep it standard with my 9mm loads. Input would be appreciated

I like the 180's for my .40. They are easy to load light due to the smaller case volume and can still be loaded nice and stout. I'm using universal right now and have some others to try, can't give you much for load date unfortunately.

Just looking more for reasoning I guess. What about carry ammo. I was given a bunch of black talon ammo but no box so I don't know the weight. I guess I'm trying to practice as close as possible. I'll just try the 180's. Run 250 of them and see what I think.

Quick search revealed most 40 BT was 180gr. That's what I'll start with I suppose

I use winchester ranger t's in 180 gr bonded. They are new and more improved BT's.

Pick any of those and you'll be fine, just as long as the cycle well in your gun.

http://m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=19887

I find that light weight bullets in any caliber seem more snappy. They have higher velocity, but less mass. Bullets with more mass have better barrier performance. Bonded is normally the best through glass and barriers but sometimes at the downside of less expansion and consistency.

Drop a few of them on a scale and see what they weigh.

I shoot 180gr Hard cast with 3.5 grains of Clays, good clean load, crony says about 845fps. For 180gr JHPs I use 8.6gr of Blue Dot, gets me 1050fps. The last time I shot Berrys I found the coating coming off at over 950fps (about 5 years ago). I would stay with a cooler burning powder like clays or WSF

I think I was going to try WST. It's got good reviews, I may go ahead and pickup some clays though.

I had some 9mm berrys seperating. I would have never known until I was shooting from retention. There was scattered shapes all over the paper. They were relatively hot loads. I take it this is bad? If so why?

I'll need to search for new bullet vendor as well

If a bullet is fragmenting prior to impact then you accuracy is suffering, additionally if you have a gas operated semi auto (my Desert Eagle is one) you start coating you gas channels. Dardas makes very hard cast rounds. If you want to come up to the Dale City show this weekend I can show a sample of the Dardas bullets. Shoot me a PM if you want to come up.

Isn't the copper plated bullet just a coating for a lead bullet. A way to keep it cleaner. In theroy the lead isn't coming apart but is separating from The copper. I'm sure some Acuracy is lost.

Thanks for the offer. I'll be busy this weekend unfortunately. I'll see if I can track down that brand.

Thank you

I use the rainier plated bullets and have taken them to 1200fps (not in .40) with no loss of the copper plating.... they are great for mid range loads... never had a problem and use them in all pistol calibers.

I ran berrys 9mm hp's and was very dissapointed. They jammed all the time. Just a poor design. Hopefully the new ones will work better.

I've not reloaded, but here is my experience.

The 165's were snappy, very.. but my gun was not full sized. The 180's didn't feel much different from 9mm.

I'm running w231 at 4.5 and a 180gr flatnose. I'm getting a buddy into reloading and the glock cycled with as little as 3.9grs. His HK didn't like it below 4.3grs. So in helping to keep it standard I went with the higher. Feels like a +p 9mm. I was impressed at the recoil difference.

I don't shoot much 40 but I load for a few guys that do(LEO's). They all shoot Glock 22's. I load Longshot powder 9.2 grains with a 155gr XTP bullet for 1275fps. Replicates their issue load.
Snappy but a real load for the 40, not for untrained shooters.

Yea that's a hot load there!

I just started shooting .40. I felt real comfortable with the 9 and this is a slight change. Stepping up to 1275 on a 40 would be real snappy. What weight xtp is that. 180 black talons I carry with are only 975ish.

Hornady 155 XTP. It's not max, but it is close to what a 40 should be.

Lighter bullet, more velocity. That explains it. Is that the same wieght those leo's duty carry. I've got some friends who are FFDO's and the stick them with 180's.

The 180's have shown the best penetration through barriers and autoglass so they normally top the list of duty ammo.
