Alright well i finally have my first 1911. It is a stainless Springfield model. I have been reading up on "galling" and just have some questions. So here i am to seek the knowledge of some 1911 veterans. So here my questions are.

1. What oil should i use to clean/remove powder/dirt/etc from the firearm (currently using rem-oil)

2. What oil/grease should i use to lube the rails and other moving parts?

3. For defensive ammo, what do you guys like and know to be reliable?

4. What holsters and accessories would you recommend?

Any suggestions and advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I like lcp for removing dirt and carbon off but really love Kroil oil best.

Rails I like white lithium or tw25b that came w my sigs bestest. White lith is cheap enough that I clean it off each time I take it out after I'm done

Don't over think it. Rem-oil is fine. Use some Hoppe's #9 in the barrel and "bolt" face. Make sure to get it all off and air dry for a bit before you apply oil. If you do use grease on the rails, I use bearing grease on all my M1As, it's the same thing as Lubriplate for firearms only a different color. Remember, firearms manufacturers DO NOT make grease or oil, the oil companies do so they really don't change much, only make grease/ oil for temperature and viscosity extremes.

The 1911 will take a bit more grease/ oil than say a Glock because it's an all metal pistol so remember to lube it up as best as you can, wipe it down with an old t-shirt or rag, and let it sit for at least half an hour before you put it up. Then wipe it down again. Invariably more excess oil will come out of it. Remember this before you carry it on your hip as overlubing it will cause oil to come out of all the crack.

Don't let this discourage your decision. Once you take it to the range you will find that ALL 1911 triggers are better than just about any other trigger you've ever pulled (with exception to rifles). They break just like a rifle trigger which is one of the main reasons 1911 lovers love them.

1) Rem oil and/or CLP
2) MFR-7 has worked good for everything from my pistols to my M1A
3) My commander likes Hornaday Critical Defense, but I hear ball ammo works just as well in defense situations. I recommend finding what your gun will cycle
4) Ive been using a cheap blackhawk holster for holster drills, but I tend to CCW mine alot so it usually rides in an IWB holster. It fits in the same holster as my 5906 so that works. Heres a link.....nice holsters by the way....

i have shot it and cleaned it. Its a smooth shooter. Cleaning is a pain, more parts than I'm use to. I think I'm gonna find some tw25 grease. I used that sample tube in the sig case to lube my ar once. seemed like some good stuff. So far the trp has cycled everything I've fed it, hopefully i can find some federal hst to give a shot.

I have to real desperate to go the armory. They are by far the rudest and laziest gun shop I've ever been to.
