Here's a nice "Cowboy" load for one of my favourite cartridges, the good ol', classic .45 Colt! Yep, the "Long" Colt. Saddle up, pardners!

Bullet: 200gr LRNFP, Lee 452-200-RF
Charge: 6.2gr Titegroup
Case: Mixed 45 Colt
Primer: Large pistol, you name the brand, I've probably used it

Load Characteristics:

This was a compromise load to make a lightweight .45 Colt revolver actually shootable, while still retaining enough oomph for "social work", if, God forbid, need be. It's slightly stronger than the really light Cowboy Action Shooting loads, but definitely does not hurt the hand. I tried it out of a Super Redhawk 454, and out of that big-honkin' wheelgun, it was like shooting light .38 Specials. A Taurus Judge Ultra-Lite becomes shootable at the range with this load.

The load does soot up the cases a little bit. But that what tumblers are for. Remember, the .45 Colt has always been a low-pressure load from the get-go, so this is somewhat expected.

This load is safe for any SAAMI-spec .45 Colt-chambered firearm in good repair.

Note: you can go lower, and Hodgdon's book does say 5.0gr of Titegroup, but real-world tests showed that 5.4gr is the true minimum, and 5.7gr is much better. I wouldn't recommend going below 5.7gr, no matter what Hodgdon says in this specific case.

I like trail boss for 45 colt loads. You can literally fill the cartridge with it and not have pressure issues. However, i run 6gr under 250gr LRNFP and it is a joy to shoot. Moves at about 724FPS so it makes for a good "fun round"

I run em thru my Super Redhawk when i just want to plink and not deal with the abuse of the 454 casull rounds i load. The weight of the redhawk makes recoil practically non existent.

I actually bought the trail boss for my .308 subsonic loads and gave it a try one day in 45 colt and made it my go to powder for them as well.

Sounds like a nice shootin' li'l load there. I look forward to trying some TB when it's available again.
