Helping a friend reload .264 Winchester magnum. Issue we are having is when round goes into chamber projectile is pushed deeper into case thus making round 1/8" shorter. Bolt will not lock in. After measuring everything we came up with projectile being to large in diameter. Factory round projectile is.257" in diameter. Found new projectiles (Sierra 6.5mm 140 grain) suggested by Lyman reloading manual to be .263" in diameter, barrel measures .263" also. Could this be an age issue(gun is 30 plus years old) and has anyone come across this issue with any caliber? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Zane Powell

No offense meant but what caliber is marked on the rifle?

Compare a fired unsized case to factory ammo. Inspect brass for non uniformity. Measure and compare the neck and shoulder areas.

Inspect chamber with a good light. May have obstruction. Section of the neck or jacket broke off.

A more complicated task is a chamber cast.

.257 is not .264

That is a huge change. Will the bolt close and lock in on a newly sized piece of brass?

If so, it could be the profile of the bullet. The ogive on the bullet may be seating itself into the lands and pushing itself back as you close the bolt. 1/8" is a LOT though..
./257 on a factory projectile? I'm with LJ, 257 is too small to shoot in a .263 bore, your accuracy should be horrible and you'd have all sorts of blow back as your brass wouldn't properly seal.
