what are you guys using for tackle?
Posted by: troutnut

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 04/05/17 06:27 PM

Can't speak for the others but I like a 7'-8' ultralight spinning rod and Shimano Sahara 500-1000 series reel . 2-4lb line
Posted by: Puddle Jumper

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 04/05/17 07:38 PM

I use the 6' Shakespeare Reverb Spinning Combo from Wal-Mart with Trilene "easy casting" 4lb line. Fish about 2-3ft off the bottom with a egg slip sinker, #18 treble hook with Salmon Peach or Garlic power bait. This set up is for lake fishing, might not work so well in a stream.

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 04/05/17 07:52 PM

My son was using a 5'6" Eagle claw UL rod with a Zebco Omega ZO2 reel,6 lb green Trilene and a big ole glob of Salmon Peach powerbait.

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 04/06/17 10:14 PM

Got a text letting me know the hatchery truck was spotted leaving one of my favorite hangouts. I slid out of work a little early, swung by the house got our gear and was in line wating for my son to get out of school. He hoped in the car and off we went. He caught this one on his second cast with a minnow. I saw the fish dart out from under a rock and hit it.

Thanks, I use to fish a lot like you. I got away from it for years and than my son started showing an interest in it. Crazy thing is, it was youtube videos that perked his interest. He's come quite a ways over the last two years.

A couple of those rainbows were a little on the small side, but it's hard to tell a 10 yeard old to throw his fish back, plus he tends to let them swallow the hook!

They're put there to keep n eat . I know they sometimes run small, but as long as it keeps your son interested that's all that matters.

Looks like y'all tore them up. We're lucky to have quality trout waters in and close to VA. What were you catching them on in WVA if you don't mind me asking?

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 08/07/17 08:18 PM

Late reply but didn't do much fishing this July but am actually trying to think of good place for trip for the 19-23 this month. Towards the end of June went to the Maury and did well and was surprised when a buddy of mine pulled out two small rainbows. They must have floated down from goshen where they stock in the colder months. Wasn't expecting that in the summer.

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 08/09/17 07:07 PM

Most of the ones from Wva are on small jigs . Berkeley trout worms, gulp minnows, trout magnets and a new one on the market. Freaky Frank's worms. Killed em on those this year.

Re: 2017 trout fishing - 08/09/17 07:08 PM

It's always a few trout in Maury river , the state stocks tb e Goshen section . Trout unlimited does a few streams with fingerling trout also.
